Welcome to AHTW. As an association of history teachers in Wales we are now 17 years old. Over the years since our foundation we have been actively involved representing the views of all those who teach history in Wales whether at school level or in the colleges, institutes or universities and related academic and cultural organisations. We have had an input into all the momentous changs that have affected the teaching of the subject since the mid-eighties.
Importantly some of our senior officers influenced the shape of many of those changes by their membership of strategic bodies; especially important was the History Committee for Wales which shaped the framework of the history curriculum for Wales. Indeed AHTW was the driving force in persuading the government of the day that history needed a separate curriculum for Wales. In more recent years we have responded to allthe many changes the original curriculum has undergone: currently we are involved in making the views of the teachers of Wales felt in the on-going 16 - 19 debate.
